Question
The University has many programs that are veryBrightEconomics
The University has many programs that are very compatative like economics, business, and engineering. This school has improved greatly from what it once was. The university has made new recreational centers. The college park area is not as college friendly as Austin, TX or some of those other famous college towns, but its still a great place, because downtown DC is about 20 minutes away. Also transportaion is impeciable, the Metro is great and the University runs one of the best shuttle services I have seen at a College.

Question
There are good and bad aspects to thisQuite BrightEnglish
There are good and bad aspects to this university. The size of the school can be intimidating, but if you are someone that is willing to adjust you will do fine. The diversity is okay. I think the percentage of minorities is quite low. It is said that this school is a microcosm of the U.S. That said, I think they can do better. Students like others that have commented need exposure to other cultures within this country. The attitudes toward minorities at this school are pretty bad. I think many of the students have preconceived notions and treat them accordingly. If I were a minority I would think carefully about attending UMD. It's not as minority friendly as some might think. That said, the student body overall is very competitive, arrogant and intelligent. I think Maryland is a good school but you have to have a certain personality to survive it. If you want to grow, learn tolerance and experience a quasi-urban environment, I think you will like it. If you are only comfortable with people that look, act and think like you, then you should not go to Maryland.
