Maryland provided a fine general education in socialGeography and Geosciences
Maryland provided a fine general education in social sciences and history for an average student - like I was. The research and writing skills I was forced to sharpen there have served me well. My major was in a soft science, not particularly highly sought after, yet I was able to land a job relatively quickly in the enormous governmental establishment in nearby Washington, DC. I have found gainful employment in the federal government ever since. The DC area job market is consistenly one of the strongest in the nation, which is an obvious plus for Maryland graduates in any field of study. The large campus provides many activities, but is somewhat impersonal and could overwhelm the timid. Finding a strong niche interest helps students feel more engaged. Since I remained in the local area after graduation, my large alma mater has always had strong name recognition. Regardless of how "sporty" you are, the great recent successes at Maryland in NCAA basketball and football are an undeniable source of pride and prestige for alumni.

Question
I loved every minute of my four yearsOther
I loved every minute of my four years at the University of Maryland. I was in the scholars program, and I think the University has done a great job of making sure that all students have communities if they want them. There are active, vibrant student groups and organizations. I was lucky to be an individual studies major, where I worked closely with a professor to chart my own academic course (which I looked for as a high school senior - I did not like the idea of someone else deciding what classes I should take). While Maryland is big, it is possible to find a place for yourself. I enjoyed the anonymity of a large campus on a daily basis - there is always someone new to meet! I think if you are friendly and willing to try to meet people, either in the dorms or through organizations, you will have a successful experience at Maryland. GO TERPS!

Question
I loved Maryland.Electrical Engineering
I loved Maryland. Every school has a couple of drawbacks--true, you're going to have to walk a bit between your tech and non-tech classes, the meal plan gets old, and tix for b-ball games can be hard to get, but I had a great experience. Lived on campus throughout, did several co-op tours with the local NASA center. The co-op program is a good thing--definitely consider it if it's available in your major. Living on campus was fun, and useful as far as study groups go. Study groups are important--don't burn bridges with your classmates. And it's a big enough school that you can do piles of other things--see cultural events, shows, art exhibits, guest speakers, etc. It's about more than just your classes, though classes are your priority. Lots of activities--I put together two or three newsletters regularly for different (tech and non-tech) organizations. I highly recommend UMCP. But bring good walking shoes when you go there. :)
