Hi there, I recently applied to this college and I kind of regret it because I did not research this college very much. As an out of state applicant, I do not know much about colleges in NY. I am planning to major in business but I am not sure if I should do it at this school. Do you think I should give it a try? Is it worth it? |
Hey, I'm kind of late on the application process because I apparently chose to have my epiphany too late in the game… but I was looking at this school because of the location and because it is still accepting admission. I wanted to hopefully major in Biology since they don't have pre-med, are the programs for the sciences bad too? And also do you think it's worth going for only 1 semester and then transferring when applications are being accepted again? Thanks for offering to answer questions, you might be saving me here:) |
I'm a little concerned reading some reviews about the academics. Are you transferring out again or are you staying at Marymount? Also, are you taking courses in your Performance Major in freshman year? I'm looking at the Directing Major. Thanks. |
I am the one who wrote this, and I am responding to all of the above questions. I never got notified about this and I hope it's not too late. I transfered out of Marymount. To the directing major: Marymount makes it seem like they offer diversity in terms of performance. Directing, acting, theatre performance, musical theatre, digital media, production, and so on. In reality, you won't be able to take directing classes until you're a junior and you'll actually be directing shitty 3-man plays your senior year. I took some 'performance' classes as a freshmen, but they were rather basic and redundant. To the biology major: I had a lot of friends that were bio majors and they didn't hate the program but most of them transfered out. It's rather expensive and the school doesn't focus on academics so it's not going to be valuable. But if you want to experience NYC, it's worth a shot. To the business major: I don't think it's worth it. I would say go to an instate school to take business classes. If you really want to be in NYC, go to NYU, Pace, or Columbia. If you can't get accepted go to a community college in Brooklyn or Harlem. MMC is community college education for the price of an ivy league school. |
Major: Perfomance Arts (This Major's Salary over time)
Please. If you think this is your "dream school," don't do it. I thought the same. Safe, great location in the city, seems to have a great curriculum, right? NO. NOOOO. I went here for only a semester and feel bad for wasting my parents money. My room mate moved out in the first month cause her program was so bad. Literally, the residence halls are like prison. You will NEVER have a moment of privacy - there's only two lounges in the entire 32 floor building, and they are always occupied with annoying people screaming and shit. The professors are literally not qualified and don't teach you anything. I learned more in high school. The attendance policy is insane - don't try to miss even a class here. You're sick? You can't make it? You will be penalized for it. Everything is overpriced in terms of food and they barely have any options. If you express a problem, all of the faculty acts so offended and shady about everything. If you're looking to go here for academics - you could do better. They will neglect you. If you're looking to go here for the arts - you won't get any internships, performance opportunities, etc until your senior year. They don't teach you. The student body here is beyond annoying and pretentious along with the faculty. There isn't a place to relax in the dorms. The library is small and almost always full. The worst part is if you want to transfer, most of MMC credits don't transfer to normal schools. YOU WILL HATE IT! I'm trying to save your life right now. Feel free to contact me, i would love to answer your questions.
