I'm going to be quite frank. I feel that every student inbound to attend a new university has some sort of mental framework of what their university is going to be like? and when it turns out that the night life sucks, the campus is completely isolated from all forms of non-university life (*cough CMU) or the major they chose isn't quite what they thought it would be, this awesome mental framework comes crashing to a dramatic and life altering halt and the whole experience has been written off as "the worst university ever!!!" "Don't go here!"

Slow down crazy…slow down.

Did you ever stop once to think what college is realistically going to be like?

When I came to Western as an incoming freshman, I was excited. I had planned all through high school to go to community college but I changed my mind, my senior year. Both Fall Welcome and Orientation student leaders and faculty warmly welcomed me to a thriving and rich community full of students who care about their education. Those who don't care? well, they're easy to identify? ;)

Another thing to keep in mind is that EVERY university is a business and will nickel and dime you to death on every little thing you can imagine.

Yes, I know it's a pain in the ass to deal with financial aid and FAFSA, but you're going to deal with it at MSU, U of M and everywhere else you want to go for school, but if you suck it up and do it and get it over with, it'll get easier. The folks at bronco express are very helpful and understand your financial situations.

Mom and Dad have enough money to get you through school? Congratulations! You don't have to go through the government to pay for your schooling. Don't rub it in my face? (Seriously, nobody likes a bragger)

That leads me to this? There are rich kids at every school. If you're not one of them, you won't be alone. Everyone is in the starving college student phase right now.

If you are one of them, congrats once again and, well? just check the privilege and tone it down. Nothing repels potential friends like someone bragging about their Gucci's.

Social and Campus life: Ever hear the nickname, Wastern? Yep, we're definitely a party school? but tell me what university isn't? Western is practically integrated into Kalamazoo culture. There are so many things to do downtown as well as on campus? just as long as you be brave and put yourself out there. (Or not, someone might approach you to join their organization on campus!)

My main point here is that Western Michigan University in my opinion is an awesome school. That's because I went into it with a good attitude. Sure, it sucked at times because I'm poor, I had to take stupid general education classes that probably hurt my GPA a little and the walking? oh the walking!

But I didn't go into my first semester thinking Kalamazoo was going to be as thriving as East Lansing on a Friday night during homecoming. I joined organizations, I went to a few parties, and I put myself out there? everything else just kind of fell into place.

My greatest advice is to get over the party scene, or at least learn to maturely sustain yourself on a Friday night when everyone is out drinking.

Put your responsibilities first. Got an exam Friday morning? Save the drinking for Friday night and then go ham with the alcohol. :)

You also need to be pretty invested into your major to get the most out of your college experience. If you hate going to class and the department isn't helpful for you then leave! Transfer somewhere else and find your calling.

If you have questions or need help with anything, just ask! All the staff and students at WMU have been helpful. Classes start next week and I'm SO PUMPED!

The bottom line is, it doesn't matter where you go, you need to have an open mind and be realistic. If you know where your headed and want to enjoy school along the way, you will enjoy it. If you're bitter and going into it with a negative attitude, you might have a bad time. The choice is up to you.
