Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
I was born and raised in Kalamazoo and decided to go here. It is no secret that Western is first and foremost a party school with a lot of spoiled rich kids. That's not a problem by itself, I mean, I like to party, sure, but it gets a bit frustrating why I'm trying to form real relationships with people here that aren't based exclusively on alcohol. Most kids who show up to class will ramble about their drinking experiences or bitch about how hard it is to be a upper class white person earning a higher education (paid for by daddy) and being expected to do homework and study. Most people are either constantly bragging or complaining. I try to find friends here to have really intellectual discussions or to get to know as good honest PEOPLE that I could be friends with for life, and it's hard, although I have found a few quality people. The majority of Broncos aren't interested in their education. If you keep looking you might find some like-minded friends who aren't so one-dimensional but for the most part, most of the people who go to Western are not worth knowing and don't care about learning. Nerds, geeks, you're not welcome - but if you're a bro or a ho, this is your arena. A bit of advice - watch your back if you go to a frat party. There are quite a few here that are shady with women, so keep yourselves on alert, ladies.Academics are a little bit of a joke. High school was more difficult than this. I have a 3.89 at the moment and I rarely have to study. But, the few classes that provided a challenge were worth it. Some of the professors are outstanding and experienced and they might agree to be references for you if you are polite and outgoing with them. As far as my major goes, it's okay so far.I love campus. It's beautiful and inviting and easy to navigate because it's not too big. Kalamazoo (especially downtown) is beautiful and eventful and there is always something new and exciting to do, even though it is a little frustrating in the winter. It might take some work to enjoy Western as more than a four-year-long party. If you have the patience for that, and think everything else is worth it, then go for it. Western's tuition keeps going up, but if you (or your dad) can afford it, I'm not stopping you.
