As an in-state student, I could not have gotten a better education for my budget. I could have gone to a private university, but UW had everything I needed to learn what I wanted and more. It's the perfect place for a self-motivated person to go the distance.

Then again, UW is a big place, so I saw a particular "slice" of it - I was an honors student at the computer science department. It was pretty obvious they don't treat all departments equally, so the quality of the school might vary depending on what you want to do—I hope that changes in the future.

I'm a high school senior looking at the honors program at UW and hoping to major in computer science. Do you think this department is one of the stronger ones within the university? Also, many people have complained about huge classes and bad profs focused on grad students. Did you feel this was the case for you, or did being in honors help avoid most of that?

Computer science is one of the strongest and most competitive programs. The classes are not any larger than those at other major universities, and many classes are capped at around 25 students. UW has one of the highest ranked faculties in the world for undergraduate and graduate teaching. It sounds like the original poster had departmental honors in Computer Science, which is extremely impressive. As a freshman, you would be applying to the interdisciplinary Honors Program. That program is very competitive: the class entering in the Fall of 2014 consists of a group of about 250 students with middle 50% unweighted GPA of 3.87-4.0, middle 50% SAT of 1950-2200 and middle 50% ACT of 30-33. The Honors Program students have exclusive class offerings, housing opportunities, events and activities. The Honors classes are usually small, with professors who are dedicated to undergraduate teaching.

Maybe everyone had a reason to think so harshly. But I myself went through training in this place and I argue that applied engineering also provides an expanded horizon for learning. My specialty is HVAC Engineer and I had a great time studying here.

I do not quite understand why you cling to the basics of teaching at this university. I came here from Canada because it was comparatively cheaper than studying in Ontario.
