Purdue is definitely a place for a student who wants to explore a new state but isn't ready to leave their general geographic region (the Midwest). I came to Purdue from a very small, closeminded community in Michigan and was very taken aback by the almost-
southern hospitality
-feel Purdue had.

If you like living in a big city with a complicated public transportation system that can get you anywhere without a car, then I do not recommend applying to Purdue. While Purdue has a great engineering program (particularly in aerospace engineering), so does the University of Southern California (USC), which is located in Los Angeles.

However, if you come from a one-street town in the middle of nowhere and are ready to experience "civilization", Purdue might be a great match for you as a "baby step" towards a big city life.

Purdue does have transportation to nearby major cities (Indianapolis and Chicago), so if you don't have a car but need to get out of West Lafayette (and believe me, it happens), you can take the Lafayette Limo to Indy or the Amtrak to Chicago's Union Station (but the only train leaving Lafayette's train station departs at 7:30 am).

As a warning, if you are not into drinking alcohol, Purdue may not be for you. Boilermakers wake up before dawn during football season to dress up in costumes and hit the bars for "Breakfast Club" and celebrate the approaching weekend at a local dance "club" called The Neon Cactus for "Thirsty Thursday." I know that Purdue isn't the only campus that thrives on the consumption of alcohol on the weekends in this country, but if you are strongly opposed to getting drunk, you may want to find a "dry" school.

Responses
responseOh, I was there one time, and I really liked this place. I was there on my way from Chicago to Charleston, and it was a great experience. However, I can say that I liked Charleston way more, mostly because of the local cuisine. I managed to discover food tour Charleston, and for the rest of my trip, I was going out mostly just to eat at my favorite food places.
