I would say UD is an average school. Socially, the only thing to do is drink, mostly thursdays-saturdays, occasionally random weekdays when you feel like it. If you don't drink, I have no idea what you would do. My suitemate didnt drink and she pretty much just studied all the time. First semester I lived on campus and I would say I equally balanced schoolwork and partying, at least better than others - most of my friends did poorly gradewise. Second semester i commuted and my social life went down the shithole, i don't do anything except study. I dont believe you'll meet a lot of true friends here, mostly superficial relationships from my experience. Academically, the faculty and students all consider UD to be a good school that is hard to get into. I disagree; I went to a public high school, but was known for its top academics in the state. I expected much more academically from UD - definitely look into the honors program if you like a challenge as well as a MUCH higher quality learning environment and attention. UD is for sure a school that you can "coast" in. You can get by in doing the bare minimum or be the odd one out and strive for greater things. Like most of the other reviews, the information sessions and tours are means of propaganda that draw students in by the beauty of the campus (that's what attracted me most). This isn't a good way of judging a university, just because its pretty doesnt mean you should go there. Advising is pretty crappy - by 2nd semester of freshman year you pick your classes entirely on your own. I went to my counselor for advice and I felt rushed and it seemed like she just wanted to get me out of her office. They changed my advisor halfway through the year and didnt tell me, I happened to notice it on my account. When I went to see this new advisor, she was pretty incompetent as I had to show her how to look up course requirements. Still, faculty and students are nice when considered at face value. Another disappointment about UD is the exorbitant expense. Not only is an out of state education insanely expensive, they clearly favor DE residents. They truly try to charge you for every little thing; their main goal is to make MONEY off of you, which is unfortunate. the UD bookstore is the most expensive out of all the surrounding ones, what does that tell you? They tried to charge me $1000 for just one semester. I bought them elsewhere for about $300. When I changed from dorming to commuting, there was a fee. Parking, fee. One thing that I think is good is the career services center. They offer a lot of networking opportunities as well as jobs/internships. Many companies come visit the school, as the job jamboree is a career fair where about 300 companies attend. Most important, if you do decide to attend the university, USE ITS RESOURCES. The university is expensive, so you might as well get your money's worth. I applied to Lehigh, PSU main campus, UMD, and Temple. I chose UD for the "value": it was the second cheapest next to Temple but I felt I wouldnt be sacrificing the quality of my education at the same time. I don't mind the school so much and I don't hate it, but I would say go to a different school if you're looking for maybe higher quality academic environment and better quality of service to students. If you like to party and your social life is important, UD is good if you live on campus. With all of the course requirements its practically impossible to graduate in 4 years if you want more than one major. You can take winter/summer session, but again, its expensive and a means to make money off of you. You can take them at a different college for much cheaper and transfer the credits. Faculty do not appear to care much for the students, although I have not yet visited any in their office hours, they may be different. You will have your share of TA's and professors who are difficult to understand due to their poor English; another ridiculous thing about UD because you are paying so much money for professors/grad students who barely speak English. I feel safe at UD; I have walked alone at night coming home from the library and although I am paranoid, I usually talk on the phone or just be very aware of my surroundings. Yes, the cops are beyond ridiculous with their jaywalking tickets and underages. I know people who have gotten both, its usually handled through the University court system, which is basically just a bunch of fines but nothing on your criminal record just your "UD record". the Police are everywhere around campus though- UD police, Newark police, DE police; although I don't feel they are there for safety measures, but rather to catch students and fine them - another idiotic thing about Delaware. Finally, theres just about nothing to do in Newark. Like I said if your looking to do more than drink, consider a city school. You can join clubs here, which will probably give you more friends and stuff to do aside from drinking.
