You nailed it. Exactly my experience in the late 70's there. Lots of denial. I made the best of it though (I guess) and forbade my nephew from even looking at the place, and he would have hated it even more.A credentials mill for boring people and nothing more. Some things never change-this is the market LU serves and always will. Thanks I thought I was the only one who feels this way! |
Do you mind me asking if you were any happier at the university you ended up transferring to? If you don't want to mention the name of the institution you transferred to, can you tell me a general profile of this instition (large, small, research, liberal arts, east coast, midwestern, etc.?)? |
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Most of the people there that are supposedly "happy and free-spirited" are in reality just pumped full of testosterone and alcohol. |

Personally, I hate Lehigh. For the sake of objectivity, I will try to make this comment as neutral as possible.I won't talk about academics, just about my prediction of your happiness at this university. Basically, it comes down to this: if you are liberal, open-minded, and looking for an interesting and/or different college experience to stimulate personal growth and build worthwhile relationships, DO NOT COME HERE. You will be sorely disappointed and have your optimistic views of the world shattered. On the other hand, if you are rich and white, and enjoy being with the rich and white; if you are strongly conservative and don't want to hear others' opinions; or, if you were a tight-ass student and got good grades and want to know what it's like to be drunk so bad that you're willing to give up everything else in your life so that you can "achieve" the endless cycle of work-drink-work-drink to the point where it becomes a process more than an appealing lifestyle… COME HERE BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME AND EVERYBODY ELSE HERE THINKS IT'S AWESOME TOOOOOO!Obviously I'm jaded. But I don't think I'm crazy when I tell people I'm transferring and they move into a state of deep contemplation. The truth is that almost no one is actually happy at Lehigh - most kids here have been told to go here by their parents, to major in something they've been pressured into by their parents. The only way the students cope with this is by drinking their faces off nearly every night of the week, but guess what, they've still gotta get good grades, so every other minute is spent studying. This leaves no time for the soul to grow. I'm not making this up, and I've seen it first-hand (roommates, friends, etc.).I like partying as much as the next guy, but Lehigh sells its soul to the devil to get its party-school label. I made a mistake coming here, and I really recommend you think about the substance of this university past its image (which is tempting, I have to admit). Two final comments:
