Major: Computer Science (This Major's Salary over time)
My mom did a masters in administration at Hofstra. I took some courses in the summers and, during the year, attended SUNY Stonybrook. In addition, I had three kids who attended three different colleges. Thus, I have a fair basis of comparison among schools.First don't believe all the negative comments that you see here. Generally, folks who are dissatisfied post, and those that are happy, don't generally post their opinions. It is just the way of life. For example, one guy's total post was about how hard Hofstra was. Give me a break! Hofstra was easier than Stonybrook for almost every related course that I took. He didn't know what hard really was.One guy felt Hofstra was Wake up and smell the roses. All private schools want money and nickel and dime you to death. Today state schools are eliminating programs and faculty due to budget cuts. Frankly, I would rather they keep the programs and charge me than water down the education. One person didn't like the food. Boo Hoo. If you compare the food to other schools, Hofstra seems pretty good. The problem is that most posters don't have anything to compare it to.I loved Hofstra and so did my mom. The faculty was great, even 30 years ago. Now it is an up-in-coming school.Schools that are trying to build their reputation are going to be hard. This was very true of Stonybrook back in the dark ages and is probably true of Hofstra now. However, I would bet that it isn't as impossible as many other schools. The faculty in every course that I and my mom took were always available when we needed them and were very knowledgeable. The facilities were great. I always had access to a computer, although at that time, it was a mainframe. The school grounds were gorgeous and the people were very friendly. I have read some comments below that noted, There may be folks like this, but I GUARANTEE that there are plenty of hard working, folks, like me, who didn't drink, overly party, and who took their studies seriously. If you want to find drinkers, pot smokers, party animals, I am sure you can find them. If you want to find others who are more like you , you can find them too. If you want to find things that you don't like, and want to be depressed, I am sure you can achieve your goals. Likewise, if you want to seek out what is good about Hofstra, you can be quite satisfied and happy there two.Bottom line: College is what you make of it. Hofstra is an up-in-coming school that gives strong academics, beautiful campus and nice people. Is it Harvard or even Columbia, no it isn't. However, it really is a decent place to go to college for many reasons.
