I really loved my first year at Wilson… then come sophomore year the fact that only 900 kids actually attend the school really sunk in. I would have been alright with that, but it was also apparent that there were huge social divides amongst the student body. I'd go as far a saying that Warren Wilson is a clique based social scene. Coming from a high school of relatively the same size, I was amazed to find that there were so few people I found able to carry on normal conversation without it being awkward. The work program is great, but it is overshadowed by the crews that serve as the poster-children for the school: Farm, Forestry, and Garden. In every social encounter I've had with people on these crews I've found overinflated egos with not much for brains on the shoulders. I've seen good friends take their appointment to one of these crews to their head. By the end I was hardly able to talk to her she was so awfully conceited. In a quote from a friend "Wilson is a bunch of kids who are so used to being different that when they show up and realize they're all the same, they try to become different again somehow… that's where we get all these wierdos."Aside from social issues the recent administration has run the school face first into the ground by destroying old traditions and firing old faces that are integral to the Warren Wilson's functionality, as well as its atmosphere.Furthermore, the maintenance on all buildings is done by students, most of who work hard, but the slackers ruin the whole pie, and it's evident in the poor maintenance of the dorms and facilities. The work program lends itself to chaos because there is ultimately nobody who knows what the f&*k is going on.
