Thank you so much for writing this response! I'm from a typical rich-white-snob highschool in Illinois and have hated every minute of it since my freshman year. I'm now deciding on where to go to college and my parents are trying to force U of I on me. I also want to be a psychology major, and want to enjoy it in a laid-back, friendly environment. I've been trying to explain to my parents that it will be full of conceited rich kids, but they think I'm being judgemental and ridiculous. I really want to go to a more rural-set college, and your review is going to help me in persuading my parents to let me make my own decision. Thank you so much for being someone else who understands how awful U of I and the surrounding suburban life can be. All the best to you in the future. |
Every school has racists and snooty rich kids. College is a lot of money. If you don't like this you're going to hate the real life. |
Thanks for your honest response. I'm from one of the top rich, highly affluent communities in Illinois and I despise the arrogance portrayed by the people. The motto in this community is: Whoever dies with the most toys, wins. In my opinion, whether you have the most toys or not… You're still dead. Anyways, I digress. I have short patience with stupid, ignorant people and I long to go to a college with "college" students—not high school students. Thanks for focusing on the social aspect of U of I. I heard that the school was infamous for drunken, wild parties and you've affirmed that. I'm definitely not applying to this university, so thank you for the insight. |
Thank you for your honesty. I visited UofI twice as a perspective CS major. I was accepted but choose a different school because, although the CS program is highly regarded, I was shocked at how unfriendly the school was compared to other schools I visited. Everyone from students, to faculty were indifferent at best and downright rude at worst. Some of the rudest, most inconsiderate students and faculty I have ever met. It was easy to rule out the school - I couldn't wait to leave the campus and can't imagine being there for more than one day. |
Major: Psychology (This Major's Salary over time)
If given the chance, I would have went to a different university. The reasons being that the campus is filled with snooty White and Asian people. This place prides itself on a diverse student body (which is true, there are people of all races here), but that does not mean they are tolerant of each other. Everybody's a rich suburban or foreign exchange student dressed up in Abercrombie and The North Face in all four seasons. The people here are rude and will grimace or smirk at you if you do not look attractive. I consider this emotional abuse and it makes me feel sick dealing with such a shallow student body. On nights, between Thursday through Saturday, drunk students will party like they've found the meaning to life. Closing your windows will not help; you can still hear their wild yelps and screams, which is quite unpleasant if you are studying or sleeping. Recently construction has been going on and machinery creates astonishing rackets as early as 7 AM. The people here look down upon minorities. I can give you examples: My first year here, as I walked down the street with my friends, a white man suddenly told us to "go back to China". Then, as I walked home from the gym at night, another guy shouted from his window: "Ching-chong hamasaki!" I guess this is his way of expressing disdain for all Asian races. Not only this, but the city is at least 2 hours from any major city so get ready to stay rooted on this boring, unfriendly campus for extended periods of time. The only good thing I can think about to say about this place is the abundance of hot chicks. But they usually won't pay attention to you unless you are a pretty frat boy decked out in the latest Abercrombie fashion. It's funny how these girls fall those type of unfaithful guys. There is one time that I overheard a loud fight between a white chick and her boyfriend over him sleeping with her friends…lmao. You chose to stick with him, sweetie. Generally speaking, if you want to lose your sense of identity and waste the best years of your life, then come here for a college "education." I am very unimpressed by this overrated institution. I was unhappy my entire time here.
