My overall experience at the U of I was pretty intellectually stimulating. I grew to be more independent and mature. If you're from the city you might find it to be a little boring here if you don't join any clubs or participate in their activities. But I guess since there's not much to do here you get to spend more time concentrating on your studies.

Before you register for classes, I would recommend you check out ratemyprofessors.com, as it helped me out quite a bit. Some of the great professors I've had were: Prof. Dale Bauer(funny and made class interesting), Prof. Courtemanche(nice and smart), Prof. Pollock, and Prof. Mark C. Thompson. All were great professors in the English department who made class interesting and fun for me.

Here's a list of the pros and cons of the U of IL:

Good: beautiful campus, big and resourceful libraries, convenient transportation, nice gyms, and intellectual faculty.

Bad: noise levels at night from drunken students, ignorant suburban kids, boring.

Lectures: 300-500

Classrooms: 30-40

Most lectures are taught by professors then there will be TAs who separate the lectures into groups of 30-40 people to teach.

If I had the choice to restart my college career I would choose the U of IL again but would've joined clubs so it wouldn't be so boring. Also, get your recommendations early and try to stand out in class before it's too late.
