My education at Penn prepared me for success in graduate school for the following reasons:

1) the coursework was challenging and better than most of my peers'

2) there were endless excellent research opportunities (the most important factor for graduate admissions)

3) the extra-curricular activities I participated in put me well ahead of other students in terms of leadership, and this in turn helped me to win a prestigious fellowship that increased my graduate stipend by 50% and knocked off some required teaching duties.

I recommend that current students take advantage of Penn's many opportunities! Penn is full of outstanding resources, but if you don't go looking for them then your experience there might be just "so-so". Likewise, motivated and mature high school students should apply to Penn. Those who need a lot of hand-holding should consider a small college instead.

Responses
responseThis is the original poster speaking—I realize that I wrote "B " for reputation because the question was worded in a way like, "how much did the reputation of your undergraduate institution help you for getting into graduate school?" The answer is that programs like mine don't put much stock into reputation. On the other hand, I know that they viewed Penn in the absolute highest regard, thinking there was no other school that would have looked more impressive on my application (though others like HYP would have been equivalent). In particular, they were extremely impressed with the faculty letters of recommendation I got. There are so many famous faculty at Penn that without trying to work someone famous, I still managed to have two letters from members of the national academy of sciences that I had done research with! Needless to say, I was accepted to 90% of the schools I applied to.
