I have attended UIC for the past three years, if I stay I will be there another two. I have to say that the quality of my education has been excellent. I went to UIC because of their reputation for great science programs, and the easy access to medical and dental school. The classes at times have been beyond challenging and I find myself working non stop to get a B. Sometimes it's ridiculous. I also lived on campus and cannot complain about the housing, in fact it is nicer than many other schools, I have been to. The reason I HATE this place, is because the administrative aspect of the school is horrible. I think they took a bunch of homeless people and gave them jobs. The people that run housing, the counseling centers and the honors college are COMPLETE MORONS. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked to these people for guidance, and I am only discouraged and brushed aside. My freshman year I went to see a counselor about med school. Her name was Judith Baxter and she came recommended. My GPA at the time was a 4.0, (because I had only been there one semester), I was applying for honors college, and I had been a hospital volunteer for 5 years. She treated me like I had the intelligence of a piece of toast. She was so rude and degrading I left there, called my dad and cried. While I was there she asked me why I wanted to be a doctor, I told her I believe I have the ability to truly comfort people and care about every patient and their needs. No joke she told me this wasn't a good reason to become a doctor! I was floored. My second year at UIC went better, with the exception of NEVER being able to get into the classes I needed, and constantly having to push things back. My junior year, this year hit an all time low. I couldn't get into three of the four classes I needed. Two were only offered in fall and the other BIOS 351 was full before I could even register. I was furious and called Jason Cashmore, some punk in the biology department, who told me he knew they didn't have enough lab classes, but there was nothing he could do about it. Finally I made the decision to move back home and attend community college for a semester so I wouldn't be too far behind. Funny how community college had the classes UIC didn't. Well this was a nightmare as well. I had committed to a housing contract so technically I was going to live there the whole year. I did EVERYTHING possible to find someone to take over my housing contract, Ads, e mail's, Craig’s list. I took responsibility, but I couldn't find any one to take my spot. UIC housing told me I couldn't let anyone on the wait list for housing take over my contract! Are you kidding, those are the only people who want to live there! I think they do this so they can charge you for breaking your contract and then charge someone else to live there are well, and collect twice. They are greedy and manipulative. Finally after months and many appeals, they told me I only had to pay 40% of my contract, oh how gracious! NOT. They also told me it was my fault I couldn't live there any more and that they are not responsible for my "poor academic planning". Then Tony Martin the head of housing had the audacity to send me an e mail "just to let me know that they were losing out on money because of my decision to leave. Whatever, UIC could go bankrupt for all I care. They have been scamming me for three years; you got enough money out of me you greedy jerks! I have not decided if I am returning in the fall. The thought of spending more time and effort navigating the incompetent registration process makes me want to vomit. I have had a horrible college experience because of UIC. My parents are quite fed up as well. I am currently looking to transfer.
