Major: Political Science (This Major's Salary over time)
I like UD. It is a pretty good school with a lot of strong programs and my experience in the political science department has been good. The faculty is approachable and interested in the subjects they teach. Also, the university offers numerous speakers and conferences/opportunities for students to advance themselves outside the classroom and for post-graduation. I don't think the university is that unsafe like some of the others who've posted. Most schools have similar crime problems, and being from Maryland I know that the state school there has shootings throughout the year. The crime here really isn't that bad but probably is on Delaware standards. The Newark/university policy spend too much time on minute things among students and should focus their time on these crime issues. My biggest negative factors about the university are the lack of diversity and the WASPy kids from Long Island/New Jersey that are snobby and arrogant. Being a minority on this campus is hard because you are largely outnumbered. Many feel the university should and could do more to increase the numbers of minority students here, but are more concerned about their money than their "diversity." But UD is able to offer good financial aid packages and the minority engineering program here is the best. I know many engineers and the school puts a lot of money into the program here because it is among the best in the country. But I can say that the minorities that are here are not cliquey or snobby and generally get along and have been able to make good friends here. Many are very involved on campus and look to make this place better for incoming minority students. It is just an adjustment if you come from a more diverse area. The rich white preppy kids were expected by me and I'm sure most East Coast schools have this same problem. They are just annoying and pretentious but i have had no problem meeting an enjoyable group of people that enjoy a broad spectrum of activities and with a lot of varied ineterests.Another thing that doesn't work to the university's favor is that everything in Delaware closes at 1a. A lot of things will close earlier but the bars at 1a. There aren't that many unique things to do in Newark other than drinking (outside of restaurants, local bands performing, movies and bowling) so students are forced to just chill in their dorms/apartments or go to Philly or Baltimore. This can be a good or bad things whichever way you look at it, but for me has allowed for a lot of good memories.Personally, I am enjoying my time at UD. It has its problems but I have had many oppoprtunities here that I couldn't guarantee at other schools, including a great study abroad experience. Once you find your group of people on campus you should be fine. Not considering my friends, I would attend another university if given the chance because I would want to try something different and further away.
