Before I go into my review of Northwestern, anyone reading this should realize these things about college in general:

1) A person's college experience is their own individual experience and depends on many other variables, including personality, choice of major, fraternity vs. non-fraternity, living situation, friends, etc. There is no one universal experience you will get from any college.

2) There are good and bad things about every college. College, like life, is what you make of it.

Given those parameters, what was MY experience at Northwestern? A mixed one. The facilities are top-notch and the campus itself is beautiful. Evanston is great for dining and shopping - and Chicago is a short El ride away, offering more options for fun and nightlife.

As for the professors, I found them to be knowledgeable and approachable. You'll get a quality education if you are willing to work hard. I think the key is to get into a SPECIFIC area of study, especially one that NU is known for, such as Journalism, Music, or Theater. Most of the people I knew who were happy with NU were those who were satisfied with their concentration (I wasn't - should have been a Radio/TV/Film major).

The social life was probably my biggest gripe about NU. The Greek system is far too dominant for a school of NU's size. If you're not in a fraternity or sorority, your social life is at the mercy of whoever you're with. There isn't much dating at NU other than the radioactive kind, and many of the non-Greek students are workaholics and social misanthropes. You could be spending a lot of time hanging out in the dorm…but then again, isn't that part of the college experience?
