I disagree that there are so few types of students at Penn. I always thought Penn had "something for everyone." Sometimes it's hard to find your niche, but Penn students cannot be classified to just three types. Hopefully people will take this freshman review with a grain of salt. I agree with the remarks about Philadelphia, though. It's an outstanding and underrated city. |
Major: Undecided (This Major's Salary over time)
There are a lot of great things about Penn that I'm sure you already know about, I'm sure, so I won't waste your time. My problem with the school is the social atmosphere; [as a freshman] unless you fit neatly into one of three groups, you will find it difficult to locate and settle into your niche. 1) If you have little-to-no experience with alcohol, and find that without mom and dad around your activity of choice EACH AND EVERY WEEKEND is to drink 'til drunk, if puking after partying is a sort of badge-of-honor for you, you'll find a lot of buddies here. This group will be especially appealing to you if your interests lie in the realm of designer labels, MTV, and frat pack movies.2) On the other hand, if you have little-to-no experience with alcohol and despise the very idea of a college party—if you are entranced by things like mathematics, Model UN, and Harry Potter movies, you stay out until 12 on the weekends, and/or (to be offensively candid) if you are a member of certain minority groups, you'll find many others with similar interests.3) If you are obnoxiously cognizant of the outsider-arty image you're desperately trying to cultivate, you'll find a few others like yourself, though they're not quite as prevalent as those in the other two groups. All that being said, I will say that Philadelphia is an AMAZING place to go to school (especially if you enjoy live music) and Penn's campus is really outstanding in both aesthetics and functionality. It's really a shame the school is lacking in likable students.
