Overall, I though Western was a decent, though not great school. There are some amazing professors/instructors in the Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, and English departments. Unfortunately, there are a lot of mediocre/awful instructors/professors as well. I promise you will be subjected to some truly horrible classes as far as general education requirements go. You can get a good education at Western, but you have to be proactive about it. Talk to professors/instructors outside of class, do independent study hours if you can, seek out graduate students for advice. Kalamazoo can be a pretty draining town to live in and there are a lot of "typical" meathead people at the university because of it's rep as a party school. Stay focused on your school work and avoid getting depressed. Plan out your long-term (graduate or professional) education in your first or second year to avoid feeling lost, especially if you are a liberal arts major. Oh, and don't skip class, even if it's in a required course you despise because even large lecture hall courses will start taking attendance as the class thins out and it will impact your grades severely. Do not take more than two classes in a summer semester. I promise you will be sorry if you do. Lastly, do not take 12 credits or less per semester if you are on financial aid…try to discipline yourself to take at least five classes each fall/winter semester because if you don't (especially if you have to unexpectedly retake a class) you might not meet the requirements for "satisfactory academic progress".
