If you plan to get into the business school, FORGET IT, PLEASE. It's not tough getting in at all. What really pisses me off is the fact that they have "controlled majors." If you want to study Finance you have to have a 3.3 gpa, if you don't then you gotta study something else. What kind of quality of education is this? I thought LEARNING was the most important thing. I NEVER should have transfered there. I had a damn 3.6 when I transferred and guess what? It doesn't matter you got to start all over again. Now I had a 3.0 this semester and I got to get a 3.6-3.7 next semester in order to get into the major I want. These guys are crazy over there. Please if you're an international student or out of state, please invest your 30,000 somewhere like UVA, Vtech, Purdue, UT. Do Not consider penn state. I repeat: Do NOT consider it.

questionIm planning on going to penn state but i got into penn state abington and im planning on transitioning to Univristy park in 2 years. Can You please tell me more about teh business school because i want to study finance to typically investment banking.
responseI’m curious. I’ve seen this issue related to having to “start all over again” after transferring in several comments. From where did you transfer? If it was from some school other than a PSU branch campus, then it is VERY common – if not universal in higher education – that GRADES do not transfer, but the CREDITS do. If it was from a PSU branch campus, then they DO transfer. Says so in the College Catalog (look here: under section titled “CUMULATIVE GRADE-POINT AVERAGE”). A key passage in calculation of GPA is “enrollment in Penn State courses.”

And I think if you read more closely in the College of Business section of the College Catalog it’s not just an overall cum that’s needed to get into a controlled major. Instead, it’s a cum GPA in some specified pre-requisite business courses plus an overall cum in all courses. I’ll bet you had not completed the specified pre-requisite courses and that’s why you were not admitted – not because of your cum GPA.
