Major: Engineering Department (This Major's Salary over time)
I am a fifth year undergrad (double specialty ME/EE)and I think CSM is definitely one of the top engineering schools in the country with the Petroleum Engineering department being among the best in the nation. If I were to do it again I would have done PE just for the money. That being said, I think students in the engineering department could benefit from a specialized engineering major, rather than just a general engineering degree with a specialty. This is a tough school, alot tougher than I thought it was going to be, so be prepared to do A LOT of homework. Nightlife at CSM sucks. There aren't many cute girls around and Golden isn't big on nightlife either. However, Denver is close (10-15 min drive) and Boulder isn't far either. Boulder (CU Boulder) is smoke-free and packed with fun bars and attractive people who are easy to get along with. CSM is making a real effort to bring its facilities and campus up to speed to compete with other Colorado Universities. In five years this place will be way better than it ever has been in the past and hopefully will attract more students. There are alot of opportunities to get involved on campus and clubs to be a part of. IM sports are huge at CSM, and are a great stress reliever if the academics get to you. Alot of people say that CSM is a nerd-haven and that no one likes to have any fun, but I don't completely agree with that. Sure there are a ton of dorks around here, but almost a quarter of the school's enrollment play varsity atheletics with the D2 football team that went undefeated into the playoffs in the 2004 season…In short, Mines is a good place to get a degree from, and even though you may want to shoot yourself at times :) it WILL pay off in the end, with 90 percent of graduates being placed in full time jobs within a year of graduation at much higher than average salaries.
