Ive been there before and it is huge! |
Major: Architecture (This Major's Salary over time)
My first year at Illinois was actually a bit intimidating. The campus itself is huge, and there are so many students that it can be pretty easy to be overwhelmed. Fortunately, this feeling lasted only a short time, since the university feels much smaller once you find your place. I have met great people that are from all over the country and the world (but it's true that the great majority of them are from the Chicagoland area). There are countless ways to be involved, with RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) that cover almost all interests, including sports clubs, political clubs, and even a club that meets to watch Seinfeld. It's also true that there are a HUGE number of Greek organizations to join, and although I did not, it seems like an overall great group of people, and I have met many friends that are part of the Greek Community. To like it here, you have to be involved- you will meet some great friends and have lots more fun. Also, take a time to explore the vast campus. The architecture is beautiful and timeless- it definitely gives you the feeling of campuses you see in movies. Champaign and Urbana are not the most exciting towns, but there's still lots to do, and there's definitely plenty to do within the campus itself. I've had very few big lecture classes, although the ones I have had were taught by excellent professors that were very comfortable and interesting in front of large groups. And of course, there are plenty of sports activities (football, basketball, hockey) that are a lot of fun to go to with friends and family. Also, the university has been consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation's public universities, and it has the largest public university library in the world. Overall, Illinois may be intimidating at first, but it's a great place, and should definitely be considered if you're looking for a big school with lots of resources and opportunities.
