I'll be honest and say that I'm only at Penn because no one else would have me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Almost all of my academic experiences have been amazing, I've never had a really negative experience with faculty members teaching classes that I was taking, and some of the people are truly outstanding.I don't think I could be anywhere better academically, but socially Penn's not really the best place for me. I didn't realise how big a deal Greek life was at Penn, so that was kind of a disappointment. It's totally possible to do non drinking things on campus, but I certainly feel disconnected from most of my fellow students becuase I don't get drunk off my ass Thurs-Sun. However, there are a number of people who feel the same way as me, it's just tough to find them. If I'd lived in the Quad freshman year, I would have given up and gone home after my first semester. No matter what anyone else says, Philly is a pretty cool place - AND WEST PHILLY TOO!! It's a beautiful neighbourhood with fabulous old houses and lots of green space compared with other parts of Philly. There are a lot of cool people living in the area too, although many of them are turned off by the generally vile behaviour of a majority of Penn kids.
In conclusion, the academics are fabulous (although the sorority girls that talk through the whole class might drive you nuts) and you should be able to find friends in Philly, they just might not be Penn kids.
