Geneseo is the place for you if:

You want a liberal arts environment where most professors expect you do something other than just fill in the blanks

The idea of 4 years in a small homogenous town sits well with you

You're interested in the hard sciences, sociology, English, History or Psychology

You plan on law or medical school

You'd like to join a Greek organization

You are open minded

Geneseo is not the place for you if:

You want a fast paced environment

You are looking for diversity

Want to major in communication or political science (the WORST departments on campus)

Want to avoid the more intensive writing requirements and grade deflation that plagues many of the liberal arts/humanities

Overall:

Geneseo is a nice place to spend 4 years - but not for everyone. The town is tiny; a mix of hippies, rednecks, and old money snobs. The greek scene is high profile. Most students are upper middle class suburbanities, usually from Buffalo, Rochester or Long Island. We're talking Abercrombie and American Eagle clad kids - not the sort of wealth you'd see at a place like Syracuse University or Boston College, but annoying if you come from the other side. Very little diversity.

Some more academic notes: the education department has an outstanding reputation…but the reality is, a school like Oswego actually has a better program. The education program here inflates grades and deprives students of a lot of classroom training. (this is why *I* left it!) Do not come here if you have any interest in journalism or politicial science - the programs are horrid. However, if you'd like to be "pre-law," the sociology and history departments are both excellent.
