Major: Architecture (This Major's Salary over time)
If applying to the University of Washington as a freshmen, beware that Affirmative Action quotas, etc, have been disassembled here. This makes admissions ultra competitive. As always, GPA and test scores are vital, but make sure your personal statement and extracurricular activities and community service are up to par. This competetiveness will continue in seeking admission to popular majors (Architecture and Business, amongst others). While I was admitted to the school of Architecture on my first attempt, I have a few colleagues who had to apply twice before obtaining admission to this school, despite stellar grades and experience. In addition to stellar grades and experience, I've found that when applying to any major at the University of Washington, you should get your application in as soon as possible - as close to the first opening day, if possible. This school isn't for those who need close supervision and attention. Lower-division classes can sometimes be enourmous, with TAs teaching multiple sections within the class, and professors can sometimes be hard to access. Upper-division courses are less crowded, and for the most part, you'll be happy here if you require less supervision and attention.Seattle, in general, is a great place to study. There is tremendous support from both the community and local businesses. You'll find that this school has a very large student population that is VERY open-minded, and from all walks of life. Gays and lesbians will feel right at home with a large and vocal homosexual population. While the African-American seems a little small, the city, as a whole, is very progressive in their thoughts about racism. There is a very large Asian-Pacific American presence here.
