Mudd is hard. At times brutally so. But if you survive the experience, not only will you feel a sense of accomplishment, but you will have probably also completed the hardest four years of your life. Anything afterwards will be easy by comparison. The social atmosphere is either great or awful, depending on the type of person you are. If you want to paint the town red, sorry, there isn't much to paint, and the local PD won't be happy. However, the parties on campus can be a lot of fun (certainly better than the neighboring colleges). And for those of you who like a little more of the intellectual in your socializing, there are gamers of all stripes and people who like to sit around and talk about math/science or silly things (often based on math or science). Some Mudders are very activity focused, and there was (and probably is) groups that enjoyed juggling, unicycling, bridge, ballroom dance, ultimate frisbee, and croquet, to name a few. You will never find a group of people like those at Mudd, so if you enjoy interacting with people who are likely brighter than you are on a regular basis, it is an excellent school to be at.Mudders often have an off-beat sense of humor. When you combine this with the school pranking policy (reversible within 24 hours), this leads to some interesting events, such as paper-mache animals, giant periodic tables of elements, two-story stacks of desks, and other oddities. Most of us would consider this an advantage.Relating particularly to biology, as a graduate student at the University of Chicago in evolutionary biology, i have to say that few other institutions could have prepared me as Mudd did. Its not that Mudd has a great program in evolutionary biology in particular. Its more that knowing a lot of specific information is not the most important aspect about doing science. Mudd will give you a general math and science background, which will help train you how to think about science. And then the biology program stresses writing, with every lab report being a journal-style write-up. I can't even begin to stress how important learning how to write about science is for doing science, so much so that the lack of specificity you may get attending Mudd is well worth the improvement in your writing abilities. And trust me, you don't know how to write science yet.And if it isn't obvious, i'm an alumnus, but it wouldn't accept 2002 as a valid year of graduation… damn interface not being updated.
