Date: Dec 04 2002 Major: Geography and Geosciences (This Major's Salary over time) Maryland provided a fine general education in social sciences and history for an average student - like I was. The research and writing skills I was forced to sharpen there have served me well. My major was in a soft science, not particularly highly sought after, yet I was able to land a job relatively quickly in the enormous governmental establishment in nearby Washington, DC. I have found gainful employment in the federal government ever since. The DC area job market is consistenly one of the strongest in the nation, which is an obvious plus for Maryland graduates in any field of study. The large campus provides many activities, but is somewhat impersonal and could overwhelm the timid. Finding a strong niche interest helps students feel more engaged. Since I remained in the local area after graduation, my large alma mater has always had strong name recognition. Regardless of how "sporty" you are, the great recent successes at Maryland in NCAA basketball and football are an undeniable source of pride and prestige for alumni.
