Major: Computer Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
A technical school isn't for everyone, however if you know you want to work in the math/science related fields, NJIT is a great place to be. Its all about opportunity. Although I listed my major as Computer Engineering, I am also in the Human-Computer Interaction Program, a joint degree between nearby Rutgers and NJIT. HCI is only one of the many new programs NJIT offers (some jointy with universities such as Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey).

The departments are large enough to provide opportunities for meeting a wide range of people, but small enough where you can distinguish yourself and not get lost in the shuffle.

Now, about Newark. While I know Newark is one of the 50 most dangerous cities in America, the areas surrounding campus are not bad. The University Heights area of Newark is as isolated as it can possibly be in such a large city. Furthermore, our campus police are actual police (State Troopers), not rent-a-cops. They do carry authority in entire University Heights area. Personally, I feel safe on campus. The up-side to Newark, of course, is the wealth of activities. The subway stops right on campus and takes you to Penn Station for 35 cents. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Riverfront Stadium are all local.

Again, NJIT isn't for everyone, but its a good deal for the price. An engineering education doesnt have to cost $31,000.
