I really appreciated my time at Maryland. Not so brightSociology
I really appreciated my time at Maryland. I thought it would be hard to make friends since I transferred from out-of-state and I was living off campus. But it was surprisingly easy. I live in an apartment complex that is a 3 minute drive or a 15 minute walk to campus. There are about 5 off-campus apartment complexes filled with students and that makes it easy to make friend. I also joined organizations. As a black male, I think it's important to join things like NAACP, Black Student Union, and other orgs like that because black people only make up 13% of the student body. And it can really freak you out if you have no one to talk to about your specific thoughts and problems. The large diversity here has allowed me to better appreciate different cultures. But it has been hard to make friends with the white community. I've met some great white people but there are a lot of subtle hints of racism. The black and white communities, rarely if ever, collaborate on events. The white sororities and fraternities are very hesitant to let a group of black people into their parties. My friends and I have been turned away to a couple parties and we ended up giving up on them all together. It's nice having DC 15 minutes away. It's important to note that grading here is very difficult. The most minor things will get your grade reduced. I now tell people that "if you want an A at Maryland, you have to be able to teach the course like the professor would." Campus is beautiful and there are a lot of fun things to do.

University is more than school learning, it's aboutQuite BrightJournalism
University is more than school learning, it's about growing your mind in a myriad of ways: socially, challenging your organizational and leadership prowess, providing outlets to try out a variety of job like functions - like a radio station announcer or drama or counseling, study abroad, sororities, multiple internships in the real world or american studies TA. At maryland you get to do it all, just seek it out and it's there for you. I lived a 24 hr day during 4 years there and loved every minute while still maintaining a 3.7 average. Car tickets are the only negative!

The University of Maryland is the best thingQuite BrightChemistry
The University of Maryland is the best thing that has ever happened from me. It was my first choice from the moment I stepped onto the beautiful campus. Being from the Midwest, I was nervous to come so far from home. But, I am so glad I made that step.

First, campus is beautiful. There are very few high rise dorm buildings and everything has charm. The main quad is beautiful (the longest one in the nation!) It seems like a really large campus, but it only takes about 15 minutes to walk across it.

Also, there are tons of resources on campus. Six libraries which is INSANE. Also, TAs and professors are there with office hours willing to help. I know many people say you will be a number at the school, but it really is the effort that you put in. This is true at all schools. If you make the effort to go see your professors, they are going to know who you are. There are some large classes at first but even as a freshman I had a 20 person seminar. If you take the time to know the professor, they will know you.

Though College Park can be a bit scary sometimes, the university has many precautions in place. Also, the proximity to DC couldn't be more amazing. It takes a 20 minute metro ride to get into the heart of the city.

The athletics and school spirit are key here and so much a part of the Maryland community.
I don't know why there are so many negative reviews out here because I wouldn't trade this school for anything.GO TERPS!
